Allegra (Fexofenadine) is used to prevent sneezing, runny nose, itching and watering of the eyes, and other allergic symptoms.


This medicine is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies such as runny or itchy nose; sneezing; itchy throat; and watery, itchy, or red eyes. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How to take

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. DO NOT TAKE ANTACIDS CONTAINING ALUMINUM OR MAGNESIUM within 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking this medicine.

Side effects

Side effects, that may go away during treatment, include stomach upset, dizziness, or headache. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience stomach pain, back pain, cough, fever, earache, or menstrual cramps. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.


Do not take this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. Do not exceed the recommended dose or take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. This medication may cause dizziness. It does not usually cause drowsiness when used under normal circumstances at the recommended doses. However, these effects may worsen if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. Using this medicine alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any medicines containing additional antihistamines. This medicine may interfere with allergy test results. Check with your doctor for instruction on how long you will need to stop taking this medicine prior to those tests. The elderly should use this medication with caution; they may be more sensitive to its effects. For women: if you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and the risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. This medicine is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while using this medicine, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Drug interactions

Check with your doctor before combining Fexofenadine with erythromycin (E.E.S., Ery-Tab, PCE) or ketoconazole (Nizoral). These drugs may increase Fexofenadine's effects.
Fexofenadine should never be taken within 2 weeks of using an MAO-inhibitor drug such as the antidepressants Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate. Also check with your doctor before combining it with the following:
mecamylamine (Inversine);
methyldopa (Aldomet);
reserpine (Diupress, Hydropres).
You should also avoid Fexofenadine if you have a pacemaker and take digoxin (Lanoxin). And you should not combine it with over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.


Store at room temperature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
